Torn between keeping or rehoming one of my dogs (Pica, relocation, and future safety)
I'm a single working adult and my dogs are pretty much my source of encouragement and joy. I’m currently working in japan and plan on coming back in my homecountry in 2 years.
I got my second girl, a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix (currently 2.8kg), when she was 6 months old, now over a year old. While I was aiming for a rescue initially, I got her from a puppy mill. She was "lower priced" per her age. I knew she’d likely go to the pound because she’s a mix and was getting "too old" (yes, it's dumb asf), so I jumped as I didn't want to leave her there.
Decided to buy her more time before finding the right person, telling myself I’d keep her if I couldn't find someone.
Because she spent those first 6 months in a 1m² cube, I believe she developed pica as a result of no exposure to nature in early puppyhood. She targets vegetation (twigs, seeds, flower buds, you name it..
).
I’m moving back to my home country (countryside locates) in 2 years to live with my folks, better financial prospects, work, etc. They have a garden and a trap door for free outdoor garden access (their home, their rules). I’ve seen enough pica horror stories here, and I’m worried that moving from an urban area to a garden full of things to scavenge will turn a mild case into a severe/fatal one even if monitored.
Personality wise, she is the total opposite of my Italian Greyhound (who is whippet-sized). She has cattle dog like energy and is a total fetch addict. I’ve put a lot of work into her; she has great eye to handler contact, listens well, and drops items 2/3 of the time when asked, carrier trained, potty trained. She can be slightly leash reactive, but it’s mostly just being scared or eager to meet, classic small dog reactivity.
My IG on the other side is my soul dog. She is very tolerant but wouldn't really miss the "annoying gremlin" if she left. However, I believe my Pomchi is bonded to my IG and might become more anxious alone.
During an over 1-week try with her prospect, she munched her paw to self-soothe more than usual.
The prospect I found wealthy older man through word-of-mouth from good owners around my area (as I'm very active in my neighborhood dog community). He lost his 17 years old Cocker 3 years ago. He is very caring and active for his age, he'd give her the princess treatment (cuddles/full attention) whereas I focus on balance and training (as I'm handling two dogs). Financially, he is much safer than me. He definitely though he'd keep her after a week, he sure did flash on her. His daughter is willing to keep an eye on her of an something were to arise.
One thing I'm considering if I were to keep her long term is about relocation fees doubling due to oil prices and conflict in the recent months. My IG is big and I plan to have her fly cargo via a professional company, which is already costly itself. Saving for two dogs in 2 years is becoming a massive financial weight, and while my folks offered to help, I don’t feel it’s their responsibility. I'm not a big spender so most of my pay goes to savings for the planned relocation.
Part of me wants to go back to one dog for simplicity, finances, and to give more time to my IG mainly. And as mentioned, I considered myself as a temporary home for her, been 8 months since then and I've finally found someone I consider good. And I did plan in the future to take in an another sighthound (much later in life).
Though, I love this little girl, she’s fully trained in my mother tongue, and she taught me so much about toy breeds in general (I never had much attraction to them). I also like the two dogs dynamic (not the ultra shedding coat though...).
At this point, I’m only willing to let her go if there’s a rehoming fee and a proper handover. Though the old man's condition is to not have contact with me afterwards so my Pomchi can focus on him (I do understand, many rehoming do end up that way). I don't think he'd be willing for a longer forster try.
For people wondering, my IG couldn't care less about my Pomchi leaving. She does not have separation anxiety, she seemed quite grumpy after my Pomchi's comeback from her 10 days long trip. They never fight, my IG gently nibs her at night, etc. They get along fine, nothing more, nothing less.
I go to dog parks often, see other owners and dogs on a regular basis for socialization. Go to breed related events, outings, ect. I might be single but they have a big circle outside of me.
Am I doing the right thing by letting her go to a home where she can get the luxury treatment and stay away from possible aggravation from her pica?
