I almost got hit with a pretty convincing Reddit phishing/social-engineering scam tonight, so I’m posting this to warn other people.

A random account DM’d me asking if I had been “spamming links lately.” They claimed somebody impersonated my account and used it to scam people. They then showed me screenshots of a fake account using a very similar username/profile picture to mine and claimed they had accidentally reported MY account to Reddit for phishing/scamming.

After that, they sent me a fake “Reddit support” email screenshot claiming my account was under investigation and could be suspended within 12 hours unless I contacted an “assigned support person.”

Here’s the important part:
They tried directing me to a Discord account for “Reddit support.”
That is the scam.
No legitimate Reddit admin/support process is going to move you onto Discord to verify your identity or appeal an account issue.

The scammer even sent screenshots of a real person’s LinkedIn profile to try to make the fake support identity seem legitimate.

At first it sounded believable because:
they used fake urgency,
they used a similar-looking account impersonation,
they claimed my account could be banned,
and they tried making it sound like they were helping me.

The moment I slowed down and started asking logical questions (“Why would Reddit support happen through Discord?”), the entire story fell apart.

Posting screenshots below so people know what this looks like.

If anybody contacts you claiming:
your Reddit account is under investigation,
you need to contact a “support representative,”
or you need to move to Discord/Telegram/etc.
…it’s almost certainly a phishing attempt.

Do NOT:
give them passwords,
give them verification codes,
change your email,
scan QR codes,
or click random login links.
Stay safe.
