How does boredom help us find meaning in our lives?

Boredom helps us find meaning by activating a specific part of the brain called the default mode network, which switches on when we are not otherwise cognitively occupied. While this state can feel uncomfortable, it is essential for addressing the big questions of meaning in our lives, such as "What does my life mean?" and other vital existential questions.

The sources suggest that boredom acts as a catalyst for personal growth in several ways:

  • Confronting Existential Questions: When the mind wanders during periods of boredom, it naturally moves toward questions of purpose, meaning, coherence, and significance.
  • Generating Insights: Being alone with your thoughts—such as during a workout or a commute without devices—is often when you will have your most interesting ideas.
  • Improving Appreciation for Daily Life: Developing the "skill of boredom" actually makes you less bored with ordinary things, including your job and your relationships.
  • Breaking the "Doom Loop": Many people use devices to avoid the mild discomfort of boredom, which effectively shuts off the default mode network. Constantly escaping into a screen makes it harder and harder to find meaning, potentially leading to a "doom loop" of depression, anxiety, and a sense of hollowness.

Intentionally seeking out periods of boredom—at least 15 minutes or longer—is described as a "prescription" to help individuals stop revolving their lives around devices and instead reconnect with themselves and others.
