Can individuals file for bankruptcy in the UAE?
Most people in the UAE still think bankruptcy law is something that only affects massive companies with corporate offices and millions in debt. But that is not necessarily true. If you run a business in your own name, work as a sole trader, freelance commercially, or operate independently, parts of the UAE bankruptcy and financial restructuring framework may apply to you too.
A lot of people panic the moment financial pressure starts building. Others avoid dealing with it altogether because they think bankruptcy automatically means criminal trouble, losing everything, or public humiliation. In reality, the law is far more nuanced than that, and in many cases, it is structured around financial restructuring and early intervention before situations become impossible to manage.
Another major issue is that people often mix together business debt and personal debt, assuming everything falls under the same category. It does not. The legal treatment can be very different depending on the nature of the obligation, and understanding that distinction early can make a huge difference in terms of options, strategy, and outcomes.
