[TOMT] 90s movie about a daughter/granddaughter with drug problem or prostitution that ends with mother's/grandmother's death
I remember watching this movie back when I was a child in the 90s, maybe early 2000s. I watched it on TV, but I don't know if it was a made-for-tv movie or a theatrical release that was later run on TV. There's a lot I'm not clear on, but I'll know it when I see it.
The movie centers on a relationship between a mother and her daughter (or maybe a grandmother and her granddaughter). In either case, I believe the actresses were African American. But it's possible that they were white (but I really think they were African American)
The daughter/granddaughter hates the mother figure. She doesnt respect her, and she either ran away from home/became a drug addict/or maybe a prostitute. I remember her having real disdain for the mother figure.
There's a funeral scene, I believe at the end of the movie, where the mother figure has died. The daughter figure is watching the funeral -- either from the news of a church, or maybe from the street? She finally cries and realizes she loved her mother, but I dont think she was ever fully redeemed at the end.
I remember the funeral scene really impacting me as a child. I think it was an open casket and they show the mother figure laying up there. i recall her being a larger woman (not thin)
Movies I've already RULED OUT, which were recommended to me by AI when I started my search:
-Imitation of Life (way too old and not the right style)
-Losing Isaiah (that's about a son)
-Daughter of the Streets (white cast)
-Crooklyn (just no)
-Soul Food
-a Family Thing
-Woman Thou Art Loosed (it wasn't a Tyler Perry mobie)
Please help me find this!
