the deal that taught me the most closed at exactly the wrong time and almost cost me my job
quota period ending in three days. one big deal sitting at the finish line. champion confirmed, legal done, pricing agreed. just waiting on a signature.
day one. nothing. i follow up. out of office. back next week.
day two. try their manager. polite response. will chase internally.
day three. end of quarter. deal doesn't close. i miss quota by exactly that one deal.
the signature comes through six days later. next period. counts for nothing in the period i needed it.
here's the part that actually changed how i sell.
when i finally got the champion on a call i asked them what happened. they said the decision maker had been travelling, saw my follow ups piling up and actually felt pressured enough that he slowed down on purpose to make sure he wasn't being rushed into something.
i had followed up so visibly that i accidentally created resistance in the one person i'd never even spoken to.
the deal closed. my period didn't. and i learned more from that sequence of events than from any training i've ever done.
what's the closing mistake you made that you only fully understood after it was too late to fix it?
