Where can I find new gear?

I’ve been wandering around the world for a few hours now, mostly still in the Hernand area, but so far I’ve hardly found any gear that looks cool or adds variety to the game. Yes, I’m searching a lot and taking my time to explore the world, deliberately looking for caves, puzzles, and so on.

Am I just too early in the game for this, or am I just missing something?
