Which game should I start with?

I’ve not played any total war games before but want to get into them. My problem is there are so many to choose from I can’t decide what to start with. Rome would probably be my favourite setting but I’m not really too fussed.

Is the only difference between the games the setting or is there better gameplay in the more recent ones? What one would you guys suggest for me to start with?
