i got completely outplayed by a competitor and didn't even realise it until the deal was already over
eight month enterprise deal. serious evaluation. we were ahead the whole way through. better product, better support, better pricing. champion was ours. technical team preferred us.
then a business review came up. prospect wanted to see long term roadmap alignment. standard ask. we prepared well, brought our head of product, presented for an hour.
two weeks later they went with the competitor.
i did a thorough loss review because i genuinely could not understand what happened. eventually got thirty minutes with one of the evaluation team who was willing to be honest.
turns out the competitor had been running a completely separate track the entire time. while we were focused on winning the technical evaluation they were meeting with the CFO. not about the product. about total cost of ownership, risk reduction, and what a failed implementation would cost the business.
we won the room that cared about features. they won the room that cared about money.
and we never even knew the second room existed.
how do you make sure you're running the right conversation with the right people when you have no idea what conversations your competitor is having in parallel?
