Need Some Advice Here (Rental Increase)
Just to set the scene a bit, I've been renting in this particular property for 2.5 years, with virtually zero issue.
Late last year, the owner put the property up for sale and I knew of a couple potential lookers but wasn't aware that somebody had actually bought it recently, like a week and a half ago it was all finalised and I now have a new landlord. nobody has contacted me about this transition and I was completely in the dark until last Saturday, where I received a call from this new landlord.
My lease was due to end on the 19th, and it had slipped my mind that we were closing in on its end date. Typically when my lease was close to ending my property manager would contact me and ask what I would like to do (extend etc).
New landlord asks the same thing, because apparently they have "plans" for the space.
Now my last lease extension I did because I had intended to move out a while ago but it never happened, and I had confirmed that with my property manager that I would most likely be staying for another 3 to 4 months if it permits. After a bit of back and forth on the phone I get written confirmation from the new landlord they were happy to extend 3 months, afterwards if be moving.
Here's the tricky part, previously the last two and a half years my rent has always been $280 pw, but I just got told that there will be a rent increase up to $330 - $350 (no lease renewal has been sent yet.)
I am aware that in my state the law requires 60 days notice for rent increase, I'm planning on confronting the landlord with this information but I'm worried about any backfire. Anybody have any advice or tips for me?
sorry if this is alot, some of it might not be relevant but I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing that's making this legal.
