[PI]Short story/confession Title: Between the Right Timing and the Wrong Feelings
Back in middle school, my twin sister and I had been friends with this really cute guy for years let’s call him Ken At first, he was clearly into my twin— flirting with her, dropping hints, even confessing his feelings one day. But she laughed, thinking he was joking, and he got so embarrassed that he stopped talking to us for a while.
Years later, in 9th grade, he and I ended up in the same class and became really close. He would flirt with me too, but I never took it seriously because that was just how he acted. Then one day, he confessed that he liked me. I was shocked, mostly because he had once loved my sister. I tried to gently show him I wasn’t interested without hurting him, thinking he would eventually move on.
But he didn’t. On our birthday, he gave a beautiful heart bracelet to me — only me, not my twin. He came to my baptism, supported me, and kept proving how serious he was. That’s when I realized his feelings were real. But no matter how kind and genuine he was, I could never see myself being with someone who had once loved my sister first.
Long story short, there was another guy friend of mine — also really cute — let’s call him PG. We had known each other for a while, but we only became genuinely close at the beginning of 9th grade. Somewhere along the way, I started developing a small crush on him, but I never planned on saying anything because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.
At the end of the school year, our class decided to organize a ball, and suddenly everyone was hoping to get asked by their crush. Secretly, I really wanted to go with PG. But then he told me several girls had already asked him — even his girl best friend — and he rejected all of them because he only wanted to go with one specific girl he liked. Unfortunately, they got into a fight, so he decided he would just go alone.
The moment he told me that, I immediately thought, “Why would he ever say yes to me if he already rejected everyone else?” So I gave up on the idea and planned to just go with my friends instead.
Then Ken asked me to go with him.
By then, I had already made it very clear that I wasn’t interested in him romantically, so I honestly didn’t know if he was trying to shoot his shot again or not. At first, I wanted to refuse because I thought I’d be with my friends, but they all ended up canceling. I could have tried asking PG, but I was so convinced he would reject me that I never even tried.
And somehow, that’s how I ended up going to the ball with Ken… probably without realizing I was giving him hope all over again.
The ball ended up being one of the best nights of my life. I spent the whole evening dancing with Ken, PG, and all my other friends, and honestly, I had such a good time. After the ball, I finally admitted to PG that I used to have a crush on him and that I originally wanted to go to the ball with him. And this boy really looked at me and said, “Then why didn’t you ask me? I would’ve said yes.” I can’t lie — hearing that hurt a little. But at that point, it was already in the past.
After middle school, all of us went to different schools. Ken and I still talked because he genuinely wanted to stay friends, but I ended up seeing PG more often than him. One day, while looking through old photos in my gallery, I found pictures of me and Ken from middle school. My sister looked at them and casually said, “You two would’ve made such a good couple. The chemistry between you guys was crazy.” And somehow… that stayed in my head.
For the first time, I started wondering if maybe I had taken Ken for granted all along. I had been so focused on the fact that he once liked my twin sister that I never really allowed myself to see the possibility that maybe he truly liked me for me.
Then one of my friends threw an 18th birthday party, and I already knew both PG and Ken would be there. I was lowkey excited. The party was amazing, and at some point Ken asked if we could take a picture together because, according to him, all our old photos were ugly. While we were taking the picture, he placed his hand on my waist, and I don’t know… something shifted in me. Maybe it was butterflies, maybe confusion, maybe both. And to make it worse, my friends were standing right there giving us those “you two look like a couple” looks.
But deep down, I kept telling myself I couldn’t like him. I had already rejected him before, and I didn’t want to start complicating things now.
At the same time, PG and I were talking a lot that night like we usually do, but there was something different in the way he acted. The little comments, the hints, the energy between us… it almost felt like he either used to like me or maybe still did. But the problem is that with him, I never know what’s real. And no matter how much I might want to believe him sometimes, I’m terrified of getting my heart broken because a part of me is convinced he’s just playing with me.
The party ended earlier for me because my parents are strict, so while everyone else stayed, I had to say goodbye. I hugged Ken, hugged PG, and left with my thoughts louder than the music I had just walked away from.
And honestly… that’s pretty much where the story ends.
No dramatic confession.
No love triangle ending.
No perfect romance.
Just two boys, confusing feelings, missed chances, and me standing in the middle of it all trying to understand my own heart.
Maybe Ken really did love me from the start.
Maybe I was too scared to see it because of my sister.
Maybe PG liked me too.
Or maybe he just liked the attention of almost having me.
I guess I’ll never really know.
But sometimes I still wonder…
If I had stopped being afraid and chosen someone, would I have finally been loved right… or just ended up heartbroken anyway?
