Can anyone give me a summary of what's happening with one piece?

My 9 yo is reading one pieve, she's at volume 96 I think. Somehow we were led to believe that One Piece had stopped, and yetserday she was showing me this handwritten letter she wanted to send Oda about being sad he stopped.

Did some googling only to realize One Piece is very much alive.

But I'm also reading about hiatuses, that it ended one before already, that the end is near.. etc.. I'm comfused by the whole thing.

Can someone give me a summary of what happened lately with one piece and what's to be expected?
