The breakup text I needed
Following up on my last post, I got broken up with on Thursday and it was really hard, especially because I felt like I might have been a rebound. I had been waiting for a message like this, and I hope it will help me move on. I’m sharing it here because I find it interesting and would love to hear your thoughts on it. The original message was in French, so I hope the translation is accurate.
“Sarah,
I’m sending you this message a few days late, and I’m sorry about that. I know you were waiting for it, and I should have written it sooner. This will probably be the last one, after this, we won’t be in contact anymore, but I wanted to lay everything out once and for all, hoping it might bring you a bit of peace.
I don’t want you to be sad, even though I know it’s probably a bit late to say that. I really hope you’ll get through this. I feel bad about the way I left. It was abrupt, and it was the first time I had to make that kind of decision like that. I’m ashamed that I let you down when I had promised I wouldn’t. When we had that conversation last week, I think it really tipped the balance, even though I told you it didn’t. I saw all your messages saying that I had changed, and I acted too quickly. At the time, I probably didn’t fully realize it.
Looking back, I think I was still blinded by my previous relationship. And yet, I swear that at the time, everything I said was sincere and felt true to me. There are some things you just can’t fake. I just got ahead of myself and made promises I probably couldn’t keep. I want to be clear about one thing : I never cheated on you, and there was no other girl during the time we were talking.
Lastly, I’m really glad you decided to give medical school another shot. I wish you the best for your oral exam.
And if one day you become a well-known neurosurgeon, I hope you’ll think of me for a moment.
Take care of yourself.”
“And next time, charge your phone.”
He sent that last little message after the main one because it was on WhatsApp and he saw only one check mark, which means my phone was off. It kind of annoyed me, because if he knew my phone was off, it’s also because we used to be together and he knows I often do that. I also really don’t like breakup or goodbye messages that include little personal references like that, but anyway, that’s not the main point LMAO
