Been a designer for 14 years now (90% in house), been using AI for about 6 months.

Discussion
  • Change shirt colour to X.
  • Add balloons.
  • Generate a script for media encoder to suit these restrictions (netflix ads etc)
  • create a figma plugin that does X
  • create a mac shortcut (new to tahoe i think) that checks for X.
  • upscaling images
  • photoshopping shit in, and then getting firefly to correct the lighting on whatever i had added to the scene.
  • Generative fill this expanded image.
  • Tonnes and tonnes of technical trouble shooting. Macs are always a mess in big businesses where 90% of the staff are using windows devices, and the whole network and infrastructure is for that.

I was against AI for ages, not even from a moral standpoint - purely just because its bad looking. We're no different than developers, sure you've generated something that works but looking at the code its a house of cards ready to collapse.

But yeah if AI wants to do my job it can go ahead and do it - i'm here to get paid, not because i'm responsible for the rebranding of apple. Big boss doesn't care how it gets made just if it looks good.

These are some mostly indirect ways i've used AI but it has improved my workflow, or at least helped with pain points.

I am probably going to get lynched for even suggesting ways i've used it, but like many big industries one of our KPI's is to use it.

I think too many of us are too rigid in our thinking to possible consider a use for AI outside of image generation. It is not going away, like it or not - its here, and i've been using it in ways I would never plan on paying someone to do anyway. Mostly just stuff i'm too lazy to do myself.

I've seen some real smart people use various models and agents in combination to generate brand assets. I'm talking they feed it a mood board and write a full .md description and of what they want and its still not enough. No vectors, too many colours, logos not working at all sizes. I'm not currently worried at all about losing my job to this thing. AI designers/devs whatever can really only get so far without any knowledge of the industry.

But I figured, rather than make a "me good, AI bad" post. I share some of the ways i've used it since I may as well.

Ok now put me in the gallows and lay it on me.
