Choosing the right gaming headset (for console or PC)

Some headsets are designed specifically for certain platforms (like PS5 or Xbox), so they may have features that work better there. Other headsets are "multi-platform" and work across PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC.

The best choice depends on:

What do you play on?

• PS5 players: Look for headsets with support for Sony 3D Audio for more immersive directional sound (great for hearing footsteps and in-game movement).

• Xbox players: Wired and wireless both work well. Xbox audio settings can help you customise chat and game sound balance.

• PC gamers: You’ll usually get the most flexibility with audio settings, software customisation and connection options like USB, 3.5mm or wireless.

Do you want wired or wireless?

Wired:

  • Check whether your wired headphones connect via USB or 3.5mm jack.
  • Don't need charging.
  • Your movement is limited while it's plugged in.
  • Best for competitive gaming since there's no audio delay + no need to stop to charge.

Wireless:

  • Contains battery (needs charging)
  • You're free to move around
  • Best for casual gaming

Comfort considerations:

Over-ear:

  • Comfier for long gaming sessions, but they can get a bit heavy/hot.
  • Gives a more immersive “surround sound” feel.

In-ear:

  • Feel lighter/cooler, but your ears might get tired quicker.
  • Directional audio usually isn’t as strong
  • Best for glasses-wearers.

Extra Tips!!

• Look for padded ear cups and adjustable headbands for long gaming sessions.

• Check compatibility before buying. (Not all headsets work across every console or PC.)

• A quality microphone makes a huge difference for multiplayer gaming!
