How do you deal with bystander effect?
I witnessed something during one of my morning jogs that pierced through my usual stoicism.
I’m usually not someone who gets emotional very easily but I had an experience a few days ago that I haven't been able to shake. I'm curious if anyone else has pondered with this kind of discomfort? guilt? idk what to call it.
I was out for my usual morning jog when I saw an extremely aged man. His back was bent at almost a 90-degree angle. He was incredibly thin, wearing just a dhoti and was using a large wooden stick to support himself. He was walking slowly, barely covering any distance and looking at his condition, I couldn't understand how he even made it to that street. He looked completely destitute and homeless. It's like he suddenly popped in that environment out of nowhere.
Since I was doing laps on the same track, I kept seeing him. After sometime, he spread out a small sheet on the ground and sat down. What happened next was a bit odd, he sat and started licking a currency note. I thought the behavior was strange but didn't make much of it at first. I have since began read about this note licking behaviour and the results seem to be kinda heartbreaking, but still not sure is that's what it was.
Afterwards he just laid himself down sideways on the sheet and appeared to fall completely asleep or at least became non-responsive. By this time, it had started drizzling. People walking by would just give him a passing glance and keep walking. It was apparent that the sight made other people uncomfortable too?
This was when a massive wave of sadness just washed over me. It put me in a sudden, paralyzing moral dilemma. Should I do something? Who do I even call? Or do I just be a bystander like everyone else? In the end, I did exactly what everyone else did. I didn't do anything. I went home and just continued with my day.
It’s been days and the image of him lying there in the drizzle is stuck in my head. I don't know how to feel about it. So I guess I'm just making this post to hear some opinions and what would one even do in such a scenario.
