I built a 100% local meeting transcriber for macOS — open source
Hey r/SideProject,
After a year of frustration not being able to use Otter/Fireflies due
to my company's compliance rules, I built Scripta — a macOS app that
transcribes meetings entirely offline.
Stack:
- whisper.cpp (Metal GPU) for mic transcription
- Apple SFSpeechRecognizer for system audio (Teams/Zoom/Meet)
- Local Ollama for AI summaries and chat
- SwiftUI for the UI
The interesting part was the dual-channel design — running two
SFSpeechRecognizer instances doesn't work (Apple silently rejects
parallel recognition), so I split it: whisper.cpp for mic, SFSpeech
for system audio.
100% open source (MIT), no signup, no telemetry.

Install:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/thehwang/Scripta/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
Feedback welcome — especially around the install UX and whether the
free Whisper base model is accurate enough for your meetings.
