College Dorm Experiences - worth it?

Family/Parenting

My daughter is 18 and going to university this fall with the option to live on campus or commute.

She is a bit shy, slower to warm up to people; prefers a few close friends than large groups. Isn't big on clubs or organized events. She's also very regimented with her schedule and intends to be focused on her studies.

I think she would be better to live at home but also to push herself to find clubs, organizations and social activities to make friends (as well as the networking aspect), my concern is she's going to be miserable in the dorms and end up home more than she's actually there. Commute the first year and then consider dorm the second or off campus housing options third/fourth year.

I'm getting others telling me that I should push her to go into the dorms because it will force her more to come out of her shell, socialize and deal with it. That so much of dorm life is making friends and being around other people.

So I'm curious - did anyone on have amazing dorm experience? If you lived in the dorm, did you regret it? If you didn't live in the dorm, do you wish you did or did something different? Especially helpful if you were more introverted or shy, how did that factor in?
