Astro A50 / Atlas Air / Fractal Scrape / Asus delta II
This is for those who are headphone hunting and need an overview outside of the Youtube Reviews.
I found that Youtube reviews never seem to detail some stuff I will mention.
And always tend to be super positive.
I had an Asus ROG Strix Wireless that was about to kick the bucket and needed 4 headphones.
A friend of mine bough a Audeze Maxwell not long ago so I test drove them.
Found them to be too Closed for me, the sound was good but not good enough to justify the weight and isolation feeling they gave me.
I search around and came down to these 4 headsets. (I don't like wires and my budget was around 200€)
1- Astro A50 Gen 5 (199€)
Somewhat comfortable. There's a downward pressure which is mitigated by the soft top pillow. I would rather have a strap to be honest.
Default pads are breathable but the hole for the ear is too small. This can be solved by purchasing the WC StealthZ which increases the space which is a blessing. But also costs a bit more.
The sound is incredible for me it blows the other 3 out of the water.
Its Semi Open back which is amazing for me. Sounds like a Closed back but lets sound In.
Sounds good out of the box with Dolby Atmos but its really easy to make it sound even better.
EQ setup is the easiest thing. Install Logitech app. Search community profiles until you find one you like and done. You can set up your custom ones and it has 10 dots which is really good.
Has a separate sound wheel. Meaning it has its own sound control. You can only see the level on the app however it does warn you when you hit 100%.
Mobility does not work at all with this. This headset connects to the dock through cables Its wireless in zone of the dock.
Cable management can be trouble since it requires multiple USB cables (PC, PS5, Power). I managed to get my dock real nice near my PS5 and if I need to charge at my PC I can just use the cable which also works. I don't like wires but because the dock got nice and neat no worries there.
Has a Dolby Atmos Licence included which is an amazing plus. I believe Audeze also have it.
Has profile per game. Meaning it detects your game and you can select an automatic profile which is great for FPS games.
Game Voice profile also works great its 2 buttons and I can finally shut up my friends in Apex which is great
Its the most expensive specially if you need the WC StealthZ pads then it doubles the price of Atlas Air. (went a bit over 199€+25€ pads)
Note:
I had to return my first A50's apparently there is an issue that can cause a buzzing noise on the right headphone.
I bought a second pair directly from Logitech at a cheaper price actually and no more buzzing. Watch out for this if you decide on the A50.
Funny story I asked my family and they all heard the noise. The guy at the store heard nothing. What a troll.
2- Atlas Air (108€)
Super Comfortable there's an amazing cloth headband and its super light.
Material on the headphones looks like 3D printed plastic. Its that bad however is not super important for me.
Lots of space for the ears.
Swarm 2 is terrible. The amount of disconnects I got was bad also the EQ customization works but it took me a while to make it sound good.
I found that the pads are really thick and together with the open back made sound too far away from me.
The sound stage is good but I came to realize I prefer Closed Back with poor isolation
There also seems to be a sound distortion issue. I occasionally ran into it in certain sounds but its hard to tell.
If you have a noisy environment or want to use this outside you can forget about it.
Mobility works great on them in case you want to take them out
They are cheap out of all 4 by a long margin.
3- Fractal Design (138€)
Somewhat comfortable. There's a downward pressure which is larger than the A50 Apparently can be mitigated by a strap. Never tried it but seems like it works.
The design is very cool and the space for ears is good.
The sound out of the box was okish.
The setup is website which is amazing. No need to have apps on PC but you can if you want.
Managed to get them to sound good with EQ however the custom EQ only seems to allow 5 custom dots which is half of Logitech custom EQ. How much that matters depends on your EQ profiles.
You can import profiles which is + for me since doing the EQ setup can be a pain, however you cannot see what the profile is until you load it because it uses codes. Has a button to switch EQ's which is good. I don't personally need it but I'm sure people do.
Mobility works great on them in case you want to take them out
Price is fair but I got a really good deal on these though.
4- Asus delta II (193€)
The Delta II are super comfortable and comes with 2 different pads.
Switching the pads around is just annoying to make them fit since the way they designed the thing.
Found both pads to be too thick and not very breathable at all. I would sweat in them.
Armory crate is just annoying to deal with and after messing with EQ a lot I struggled to find a profile that would sound good and to create a good balance between sound and bass. It does have a bass boost slider which helps but it was still super awkard.
They are really hard to make it sound right to you and out of the box it won't sound good.
Mobility works great on them in case you want to take them out.
Battery is long lasting which is a plus but I just charge every night so it doesn't really matter.
For me not worth it for the price I paid even with the 2 pads.
Conclusion:
My advice is just buy all headphones you want to try and return them. I disliked doing this but when it comes to sound there really no other option for me.
I kept the Astro A50 for main gaming sessions and music.
I also kept the Fractal Design for my girlfriend since she liked them very much.
