This song was released as a single on November 11, 2002 (US) and March 17, 2003 (UK). It features as the third single in their second studio album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head", which dropped on August 26, 2002 (UK) and August 27, 2002 (US). Driven by a hypnotic piano riff. This track is considered Alternative rock and Psychedelic rock. Deals with themes of urgency, indecision, and a tense, passionate relationship. It is widely regarded as one of their signature songs. Built on a piano riff using a descending sequence: \(E\flat\) major, \(B\flat\) minor, and \(F\) minor. It expertly balances a feeling of anxious tension with a cathartic, melodic sense of hope. Its timeless appeal lies in its melancholic yet soaring composition. The lead singer has stated that the track was inspired by the British rock band "Muse". According to the frontman, some of the lyrics on the original recording were just mumbles that he only figured out years later. The outro melody, which is now a piano variation, was originally whistled by producer Ken Nelson. U2 frontman Bono named this song as one of 60 songs that saved his life.

"Confusion that never stops

Closing walls and ticking clocks

Gonna come back and take you home

I could not stop that you now know

Singin' come out upon my seas

Cursed missed opportunities

Am I a part of the cure

Or am I part of the disease? Singin'"
