**1️⃣ “Monero” literally means “coin”**

The name comes from Esperanto, a constructed language from the 19th century designed to bring people together. Its plural, *moneroj*, follows Esperanto grammar perfectly. So you end up with one of the most hardcore privacy coins on the planet…named in the spirit of global peace. Peak irony.

2️⃣ **It started with a community revolt**

In 2014, a Bitcointalk user going by *thankful\_for\_today* launched BitMonero. The community quickly turned against his direction, forked the code, shortened the name to Monero, and took control of the project. To this day, both the original founder and the author of the first whitepaper remain anonymous. The untraceable coin was created by people nobody can trace.

**3️⃣ The IRS literally put a bounty on breaking it**

In 2020, the IRS Criminal Investigation unit offered up to $625,000 to anyone who could reliably trace Monero transactions. They brought in Chainalysis, the top blockchain forensics company in the game. Years later, Monero is still publicly described as extremely resistant to deanonymization. The U.S. government burned through hundreds of thousands of dollars and never got a “kill switch.”

**4️⃣ North Korea turned it into cyber‑weaponry**

In 2018, security researchers linked North Korean hackers to cryptojacking campaigns that infected computers worldwide, silently mining XMR and sending it back to Pyongyang. No banks, no transparent ledger, no sanctions filters. It’s one of the few cryptos that has been used not just as a speculative asset, but as a state-level financial weapon.

5️⃣ **Infinite supply is a feature, not a bug**

Unlike Bitcoin, where the block subsidy eventually drops to zero (and nobody really knows how miners will behave long term), Monero uses tail emission: a permanent 0.6 XMR block reward, forever. Mild inflation (around 0.8% annually at first, decreasing over time) replaces lost coins and keeps miners economically aligned with the network indefinitely. While Bitcoin is betting on a future fee market that doesn’t really exist yet, Monero has already hard‑coded a sustainable miner incentive model into the protocol.
