Buying a used truck in the rust belt, worth it to look elsewhere?
I’ve been having so many issues with the current used truck market, which no one is surprised with I know. I’ve been wanting a Tacoma ‘12-‘15 year range or a ‘08-‘17 year range Tundra. Since I live in the rust belt not only is everything extremely expensive, it’s rusty but not trusty with so many under body coatings you can’t properly see what’s been infected with rust.
I’ve seen people talk about paying mechanics to look over cars when used car shopping (PPI?) but is there such a thing for those who would do it for you out of state? I’ve only ever interpreted these settings as you test drive a used truck or car, drop it off at the trusted mechanic to do an inspection, pay them then return the truck to the dealer and make your determination from there. But since where I live is absolute bonkers cruddy, I’ve considered buying out of state but do not have the time or money to waste driving a days worth to get there and see the vehicle does not live up to what was shown to me or discussed.
I will say I keep an eye on dealership reviews, ask for under hood, underbody, wheel well photos and review the carfax reports as best as I can. I just wish and hope (?) there was a service you can use or talk to that helps buying used cars easier in terms of actual mechanic inspections, not the “we gave ‘er a look and the car is perfect!!” you typically hear from average dealers.
TL;DR I want older Toyota truck not infested with rust. Need to go to not rust belt states. How can I not get swindled by sketchy dealers out of state?
