Getting laid off in a corporate layoff (General Motors) after manager told us we had nothing to worry about (austin, texas)

My team recently got caught up in yet another corporate layoff. But this time they got like 1/2 of us. All were performers and no one was on a PIP. We appear to be getting 2 months severance after 3-5 years of service. My question is this...

About three weeks ago I asked my manager if we had anything to worry about with layoffs and he said that we should all be fine and didnt have anything to worry about if we just worked as usual. I had another co-worker tell my manager that he was about to go on paternity leave as he was expecting. All of these messages are in slack.

Can any of this be used in our favor? Can we use this to adjust our severance package? If we can use this to adjust our severance package how do we go about that? We are supposed to get our official severance package offer on friday.
