The One Piece is a vessel meant to seal the Devil, and Imu has been containing it inside themselves for 800 years

Theory

Hi there, this is Fofito and i just watched all the anime in the past 2 years, here is my theory. If am right, Oda you owe me dinner.

The final villain isn’t Imu. It’s the Devil — the entity behind the entire Devil Fruit contract system. Every fruit is a contract. The sea rejects users because Devil Fruits are unnatural to this world.

Here’s what I think actually happened during the Void Century:

Joy Boy’s mission was to seal the Devil into the One Piece. The One Piece isn’t treasure. It’s a vessel — a sealing tool prepared by the Ancient Kingdom specifically to contain the Devil and end the contract system forever. Joy Boy failed. He couldn’t get the Devil into the vessel in time. He apologized on the Poneglyph for this failure, not for failing to move the fishmen.

Imu’s sacrifice: they took the Devil into themselves to stop it. With Joy Boy dead and the vessel unused, someone had to contain the Devil to prevent it from running loose. Imu signed the deepest contract ever made — the Devil lives inside them. The “price” Imu pays:
• Cannot leave Mary Geoise (the containment is anchored there)
• 800 years of immortality is the contract sustaining the seal, not a reward
• Body fails when they leave — the seal weakens away from the anchor
• Has to maintain the entire World Government as scaffolding for the containment

Imu isn’t a tyrant by choice. Imu is a jailer. The tyranny is what keeps the Devil locked down. They became a monster to prevent a worse one from being free.

Why Film: Red is the prototype. Oda canonically wrote Red. Tot Musica = a demon sealed in a Devil Fruit, possessing successive users, requiring simultaneous attacks in both realities to defeat. Oda explicitly stated Tot Musica is created by “the same process that creates Devil Fruits.” He showed us the template for the ending in miniature.

Why the Straw Hats have so few Devil Fruits. Shanks, Roger, Zoro, Sanji, Jinbe, Nami, Usopp, Franky — they refuse the contract. The truly free pirates don’t sign deals with the Devil. Blackbeard is the opposite — he keeps signing more contracts and becoming a deeper vessel. Luffy’s Nika fruit is the anti-contract fruit, the only one that liberates rather than binds.

The ending I’m predicting:
1. Luffy reaches Imu and somehow recognizes what Imu actually is — not the enemy, but the world’s prison guard
2. Imu sees Joy Boy in Luffy and finally gets to rest. They die, and the Devil is released from its 800-year containment
3. The Devil manifests directly. Possibly through Blackbeard, possibly on its own. Probably terrifying.
4. The Straw Hats race to Laugh Tale. The One Piece — the original vessel Joy Boy couldn’t use — is still waiting there
5. Luffy as the completed Sun God Nika does what Joy Boy couldn’t: seals the Devil into the One Piece for good
6. Devil Fruits become regular fruits. The sea welcomes everyone. All Blue manifests — the world returns to its pre-contract state
7. Luffy becomes the Pirate King not by conquest but by completing Joy Boy’s unfinished mission
Why “Laugh Tale.” Laughter is the only thing that can’t be contracted. You can’t trade for joy. Naming the sealing site “Laugh Tale” tells us what kind of power activates the vessel — and why only Luffy can do it.

Why “One Piece.” Not a treasure that gets taken. The final piece that completes the seal. Roger gathered everything in one place but couldn’t be the one to use it. He laugh-cried because he found the answer too early — the vessel needed the next Joy Boy, who hadn’t been born yet.

Imu isn’t the villain. Imu is the most tragic character in the series — someone who took the worst thing in the world inside themselves to protect it from everyone else, for 800 years, alone, hated by the world they were saving. The real twist isn’t that Imu is evil. It’s that they were the last line of defense, and Luffy is going to set them free.
