Is fear of false AI flags turning school into “don’t sound too good at writing”?

Lately it feels like a lot of students are spending more time worrying about whether their writing will “sound AI” than actually improving their writing skills. Some people are intentionally making their work less polished, adding awkward phrasing, or overthinking every sentence just to avoid getting falsely flagged by detectors.

That’s the part that feels backwards to me. Education is supposed to encourage clear thinking and strong communication, but now some students feel like sounding too organized or professional could make them look suspicious.

At the same time, schools say these tools help protect academic integrity. But if students are focusing more on avoiding suspicion than developing their own voice, are we really improving learning outcomes, or just changing student behavior?

Curious how other people see it. Are AI detectors helping education, or are they slowly shifting the focus away from actual writing?
