Is "name countries/cities on a map" Geography largely an American thing, or is my school just weird for not teaching that?
I live in the UK and an studying Geography further now. I love it. Probably my favourite subject, especially physical geography because I adore volcanoes and glaciers.
But the first thing anyone asks me when I tell them I do geography is something along the lines of "can you name all the _____ on a map??" To which the answer is no. I can't, because that's not what geography in school setting is. We learn about rivers, coastlines, glaciers, tectonic hazards in physical geography, and people and more social-economic things in human geography.
I've always been aware of the "countries and cities" geography, but I've never done it in school at all. I always assumed it was a largely an American thing, but since people who have also lived and done their education in the UK have asked me this, I don't know what to think anymore!!!!
So what is the case? Is "countries and maps" geography what usually gets taught and my school is weird for not doing that, or is it that it's an American thing and people are just poking fun at me and I'm too oblivious to tell??
