What makes you take an indie perfume brand seriously?

There are so many indie/niche perfume brands now that it is hard to tell what is actually worth sampling.

Sometimes the branding is gorgeous but the scent feels flat. Other times the website looks basic but the fragrance is amazing.

What makes you trust a smaller fragrance house enough to sample or buy? Notes? Reviews? Perfumers? Bottle design? Brand story?
