13 days from D-Day. Husband of almost 9 years cheated with his married boss who has a child, and left me for her. Still breathing, barely. How did you find hope?
35F. Together 10.5 years, married almost 9. D-Day was April 29th.
My husband (37M) confessed to cheating with his boss — a married woman with a young child who is now leaving her own husband to be with him — and the next day told me he was leaving me for her. He had already packed while I was at work.
What makes this harder to process is the gaslighting I didn’t recognize until after he left. He would initiate fights — yelling, then pivoting to play the victim with red eyes and a trembling voice, saying he felt hurt that I wasn’t there for him. Meanwhile he was the one pulling away, spending 90% of his time drinking with her after work and on work trips. I gave him space because I thought that’s what a supportive spouse does. He weaponized it against me.
What I didn’t know then: while I was carrying his tailored suit across the Pacific on a trip I planned, delivering a package for his mistress to her father not knowing who she was, booking premium flights for us across continents, buying him thousands of dollars in gifts — he was building something else entirely. I didn’t recognize any of it as gaslighting until two days after D-Day, when I finally talked to my friends and started to piece together what had actually been happening.
Last November, he told me his boss had confessed feelings for him — and that he had feelings for her too. He followed this by blaming me for not being exciting enough, saying our life lacked sparkle. I was deeply hurt. But I still loved him. I told him he could stay at the job he was passionate about, as long as he ended things with her. He agreed. He didn’t. I found out on April 29th just how much he hadn’t ended things.
On April 29th he confessed the affair. On the morning of April 30th he told me he was leaving the company and cutting ties with her. At 10am he texted me “you are my priority.” I went to work believing we were going to fight for our marriage. While I was working, he packed everything and moved his belongings out. When I came home at 5pm, he was sitting on the couch. He stood up, looked me in the eyes and said “I have to be honest with myself. I love her.” Then he left. He performed responsibility — confessing to her husband, positioning himself as the man shouldering consequences — while completely removing me from the equation. He cared about her feelings. He cared about her husband’s feelings. I was invisible. We talked about it. We made promises to each other that we would communicate, respect our marriage, never do what our parents did. I believed him completely. I loved him with my whole heart for ten and a half years and I thought he was the one person in this world who would never hurt me.
I have almost no birth family support — complicated family history. My in-laws are kind but distant. My support system is entirely my friends, who have been incredible. I also have three pets I’m caring for alone, which grounds me but also means I can’t just leave or escape.
I’m 13 days out. Every day is hard. Every breath is an effort. He has moved into a new apartment and appears to be moving on with his life while I sit in the ruins of ours.
My questions for survivors:
1. How did you get through the early days when the pain felt unsurvivable?
2. For those without family support — how did you build something to hold onto?
3. How do you stay hopeful when the person who betrayed you seems to be moving on happily with no consequences?
4. I can’t confront him or seek closure because we’re in a legal process and anything I say could cost me financially. How did you survive having no outlet for the pain?
5. Part of me desperately wants to meet him once, calmly, just to ask what changed between 10am and 5pm on the day he left. No arguments, just answers. Has anyone done this? Did it help or make things worse?
I’m not looking for advice on whether to reconcile — that ship has sailed. I’m just looking for fellow survivors who made it to the other side and can tell me what that looks like.
Thank you for reading.
