Nauru’s story feels painfully familiar for anyone in the lost generation.

A population was promised prosperity through “development.”

Instead, outside powers extracted enormous wealth, destroyed the land, and left future generations trapped with the consequences.

For decades:

* Colonial powers mined Nauru’s phosphate wealth
* Roughly 80% of the island was environmentally devastated
* Traditional food systems collapsed
* Economic dependency deepened
* The long-term burden fell on ordinary people

The people doing what they were supposed to do did not inherit prosperity.

They inherited collapse.

Today:

* Around 95% of adults are overweight
* Roughly 70% are obese
* Nearly half the population suffers from diabetes or prediabetes

The elites and political systems that profited largely moved on.

The structural damage stayed.

For many millennials and younger generations, this mirrors broader realities:

* Work harder
* Trust institutions
* Follow the system
* Accept inequality
* Watch wealth concentrate upward
* Inherit rising instability

Nauru is an extreme example, but the pattern is recognizable:
Older power structures often protect wealth accumulation while younger and ordinary populations absorb economic, environmental, and health consequences.

We were sold progress.

Too often, what was delivered was extraction.

We were told growth, hard work, and “development” would secure the future. Nauru shows how elites can extract everything, destroy the system, and leave ordinary people with the collapse.
