Is a complete lack of communication enough to quit my new job?
Hi everyone. I graduated with my BFA in graphic design about two years ago, and promptly started a part time role for a city government department. It was great and I loved it, but upper management was unwilling to give me any kind of full time role, and I eventually started looking for something else (because I was struggling to afford literally anything).
I eventually got interviewed for a social media manager job, full time, at an event space/restaurant type deal that is locally owned by a husband and wife. Everything seemed absolutely perfect. They were offering great pay, great benefits, great hours, and I would be in charge of making, scheduling, and posting social media content and occasionally helping with printed work. The only downside at the time was the commute, which was a little over an hour, but I told myself it would be worth it to finally have a stable job with good pay. They had me create a test reel for them for social media and even paid me for it, which seemed like a green flag, and then I was offered the job two days after I sent that in.
I put in my two weeks at my old job and immediately started at the new one after. The first two days were great, I was set up in a small room as an office with multiple other people but I didn’t think anything of it because I was so excited to finally have a job where I was taken seriously. I made a video for a product launch that first week and took a lot of pictures and video footage to be used, turned everything in, and got edits back for the video. Sent those in, then… radio silence.
They posted a different video for the launch instead, one that I didn’t make or had any part in making. Every email, message, and call I was trying to make towards them was completely ignored, no response. I eventually found one of the owners in the rare event that he wasn’t in his office with the door locked all day, and he told me that the video I made “wasn’t up to our standards,” and “hopefully you will be aligned with what we’re wanting soon”.
I was sent a small list of social media content last week to make, which was the only other contact I’ve had with them since then, and I got it done pretty quickly, turned it in, and nothing. All the content being posted on the social media accounts isn’t from me in any capacity. They aren’t even using the pictures I’ve taken. This week, I came to my desk to find that the camera I’d been using was gone, so I don’t even have a way to try to get more content to try to prove to them that I’m worth keeping around.
I’ve only been here for three weeks, but is this enough to just… quit? I have a phone interview in a couple days for a similar job, and I’m not planning on leaving until I have something else lined up, but I’m kind of at my wits end. I have no idea why they even hired me. Are they stonewalling me to get me to quit? If that’s the case, I’m not even sure what I could have done to even prompt something like that happening.
Any advice would be appreciated !
