*Real numbers and layouts from makers who consistently clear $1,500+ at weekend markets, plus the booth mistakes that quietly kill sales.*

Layout, lighting, and lit testers do more for sales than any discount.

A good craft fair can match a month of online sales in one weekend. A bad one burns a Saturday and 200 dollars in booth fees. The difference is rarely your candles, it's your booth, your price ladder, and how much inventory you brought. Here is what works.

# Build a price ladder, not a price list

Customers at fairs decide in under 30 seconds. Give them three obvious tiers: an entry product (wax melts or 4 oz tins at $10 to $14), a hero product (your 8 to 9 oz signature jar at $24 to $32), and a premium or gift option (3-pack, large vessel, or seasonal at $45 to $65). The middle tier should be 60 to 70 percent of your sales. Run the math in the [Cost Calculator](https://candlemath.com/app/cost-calculator) first so every tier hits at least 65 percent gross margin after booth fees.

# Always have lit testers

One unlit candle is a jar. One lit candle is an experience. Burn at least three of your bestsellers throughout the day, rotate scents every hour so the air doesn't go flat, and keep them at nose height (not on the floor table). Customers who smell a lit candle convert 3 to 4 times more often than ones who only sniff cold jars.

# Inventory math: how much to bring

Estimate foot traffic from the fair organizer, then assume a 2 to 4 percent conversion rate at a well-styled booth. A 3,000 person fair = roughly 60 to 120 buyers. With an average order of $35, plan inventory for $3,000+ in retail, weighted heavily toward your hero SKUs. Pull exact stock-on-hand from your [Inventory](https://candlemath.com/app/inventory) the morning of, and carry a reorder list in your phone for what to pour on Monday.

# Booth layout that drives traffic

Use vertical risers, not flat tables. Customers walk past flat displays without stopping. Stack wooden crates, tiered shelves, or simple wood blocks under a linen cloth so candles sit at three different heights. Put your hero SKU at eye level dead center, entry tier at hand level on the corners, premium tier slightly higher with a small "gift ready" sign. Keep your card reader and bag station to one side so you're never blocking the display while ringing up.

# Capture leads, not just sales

For every 10 buyers, expect 30 to 50 people who almost bought. A simple "10 percent off your first online order, drop your email" sign on a clipboard converts 15 to 25 percent of browsers into your list. That list is worth more than the day's revenue, especially heading into Q4. Sync new emails into your newsletter tool the night of the fair while the brand is fresh.

# The hidden costs to track

Booth fee, parking, gas, food, packaging supplies, sample melts, square fees (2.6 percent), helper's pay if you brought one, and the candles you gave away as samples. Add it all up. Many makers think they made $1,800 and actually netted $900. Log every fair as a single sales channel in the app and you'll know within a season which markets are worth driving back to.
