How does language referring to trans people (and gender in general) work in non-romantic languages?
For some context, I have been learning Japanese lately which is a non romantic language, so a lot of words can be used to refer to men or women without any issue, so I started thinking about it and how people gender people in non romantic languages. I know some words like pretty are gonna generally refer to a women or to a man, but I mean more surface level than that.
For me, I know when I am passing because I get called, Sir or He. I know that was really important to me early in transition for all of my friends to call me he/him or they/them.
So I'm curious for people who live in areas where a non romantic language is generally spoken, how does language work for you when referring to gender. How do you get gendered properly by people when they are talking to you generally when there are much more limited gendered terms or its just not hard-coded into the language?
