Something took over my neighbor's house

Body Horror

CW: Animal death, voyeurism, sexual themesIt began last week when I was peeking at the neighbor’s house across the road. Pretty little Ashley had just gotten home from class. She usually  gets home around 6pm on the weekdays, though she pretends to like drinking with her “boyfriend” on the weekends and so she comes home later on Saturdays. And so I sat, peering at an undressing college girl behind my blackout curtains, sitting on hardwood floors carpeted with weeks old McDonald's wrappers and cigarette butts. She always kept her room’s windows open. I bet she likes the attention. *My* attention.

I watched from my phone, zooming in at the second floor window, watching her unbutton her shirt. Slowly. She wasn’t usually slow with the buttons. And she began from the bottom buttons and not the ones near the collar. What the fuck? That wasn’t all. When she finally unbuttoned her shirt, she just… I dunno, stood there? She wasn’t staring at anything either. She was just facing a wall. Hell, it was a nice view –any look at her is a nice view –but only for the first 10 minutes. After that, it was eerie as fuck. She didn’t move a muscle. Not a single one. Not a twitch in the corner in her mouth, a blink, or a wiggle at the brow. Nothing at all, except the rhythmic rise and fall of her shoulders.

Shoulders was all it was though. Looking closer at her chest, her belly, and there wasn’t a single shake or quiver. Was she breathing? Pretending to breathe? Shit was freaking me out. I was frozen too, afraid that if I so much as breathed wrong, it would wake her up and she’d come running at me.

I stay like this for hours, watching her, sure that the next second, she would snap her neck towards my window and look me right in the eye, and scream some unholy sound, blood pouring from her eyes as lights flickered around us both. But nothing. She stayed there for a long time, a good 2 hours or so. Maybe she was just, I dunno, in a mood. Women have those kinda days right? Those periods or whatever?

Anyways, I went to bed, and hoped she was okay. Maybe her boytoy finally dumped her? That’s what I was thinking, atleast. Come daylight , I went to peak out and she was gone from her spot.

Some part of me wanted to waddle on over to my doors, make sure my padlocks are still doing their thing, check my cameras, but a quick glance at my doorbell app put me at ease. The night was quiet, and the only notification was one at 5:20AM, around 5 hours ago. It was around the time Carl, the dad, took Mike, the little one, to school.

I watch the footage and see a black Ford pull out the driveway, hitting their fucking mailbox on the way out. Knew the old slime was a drunk, but he never drank in the morning There was a notification for 6, when Ashley went off for her 8am classes. She was in her same button shirt as last night, still unbuttoned but this time it was inside out. She was barefoot, her pants were nowhere in sight, and her unbuttoned shirt revealed a bra that only clung to one shoulder.

Switching from the doorbell footage to the cameras outside, I go back to around 5:20, and see the family’s old Ford pull out and hit the mailbox on the way out. It kept pulling out though, kept going in reverse, and when it was outside the doorbell’s view, it hit a dog on the way out. Didn’t stop. I run to the curtains and peek down at where the dog ought to have been. It was still there. Its ribs rose out like the gnarled teeth of a macerated corpse, no doubt creating a fume in the mid-day sunlight. Why had no one gone to pick it up?

I went back to the footage, the car kept reversing away from my cameras. It almost hits a car before disappearing into downtown. I fast forward, and at around 5:30 the door juts. I thought it was something with the footage and the speeding up, but no, over the course of 20 minutes, the door very slowly opens up. Very, very slowly. I could imagine the hinges, creaking like some old moss-covered mausoleum. And by 5:50 it was fully ajar, opening to the inside of the home. In the dark, just barely visible, I see Ashely.

She was just standing there, her eyes lost to pixelation and distance, but all the more terrifying, as what little of her eyes were there, were colored nothing but white and hints of red. She burst out the house at 6, taking her left knee up to her chest, and falling forward, as if expecting her foot to catch her, like it was a separate being altogether. She tried it again and again, falling on her face. There was something about how she fell though, how she never even tried catching herself, how her arms stayed at her sides, her nose kerplunking onto concrete, and when she got up, her face would be a new shade of fucked up. Her eyes were just about falling out their sockets, her jaw off center, and she would fall facefirst not a second later.

This went on for a while until she managed to trundle away from the camera’s sight. What the fuck was going on? I called the police immediately, already thinking of an excuse for having so many cameras. And then, something picked up. Not someone. Something.

“Hello, police? I’d like to report a–”

“Ha-hh, hngg” it was grunting and moaning into the phone. Sounded like a man.

“Hello? Please I think someone’s hurt”

“Guhh-hu, hah, hu– Johny! Johny! Baby, get the gun!” Suddenly, it sounded like a woman, screaming bloody murder. “Johny! Fuck! Fuck! FUCK! Hello this is 911, what is the nature of your em– hngg” It was a woman then a man sounding somewhere between climax and getting a bullet to the head, then a calm 911 operator. The thing on the phone wasn’t human. I hung up immediately. I check my locks, double check them, then lock myself in the room. And here I am, in my smoking den, just like all the days before it, but this time it’s fort fucking knox, and I got a loaded gun. Just one bullet though. I can tell you one thing: I’ve seen enough movies, I’d rather keep an exit for myself.

I’m writing this at 11PM. There’s something in their house. The lights keep going on and off at random, and every now and then a shout, a long winded yelp, then laugh. I peer at them with my phone. I see it, so many shadows moving in and out, faces entirely battered and bloody, swollen and red, turning at random. I see Ashley, in the living room now, with some of what I recognize to be the other neighbors. They're sitting in a circle. Occasionally, one of them flaps their mouths open, before closing them. Sometimes the flapping makes sound, sometimes not. In the kitchen I see the Carl and Mike, sat at the dinner table with guests. They put forks up to their tongues, but never swallow. Someone is running from room to room, their arms never swaying, and always hitting the walls. There she goes again now, thudding hard against wood. And old woman in a floral coat and white hair, now dotted with red and chunks of flesh, darting back and forth, crashing facefirst into bloodied walls. There’s a door in the living room that’s never been there before.

There’s something downstairs now. I don’t know what to do. Please send help
