Why Most SEO for Orthodontic Practices Generates Traffic but NOT New Patient Starts... And What to Fix First
Most SEO for orthodontic practices is built to win keyword rankings, not starts. The practices actually growing fix three local-intent fundamentals before anything else: Google Business Profile, separate pages for each location and treatment, and reviews.
We've worked with nearly 600 orthodontic practices. When a doctor tells me their SEO isn't working, the report from the previous agency almost always shows the same picture. Traffic's up, rankings have moved, the phone hasn't.
The problem isn't the SEO. It's what's being optimized.
National keywords like "Invisalign cost" or "do braces hurt" pull in research traffic that will never book a consult in your city. Local-intent keywords are what move case acceptance. Searches like "orthodontist in [city]," "Invisalign in [city]," and "braces near me." Those are the families ready to schedule.
So before anything else, three things to fix.
First, Google Business Profile. Categories, services, photos, weekly posts, Q&A. This is what gets you into the 3-pack, and the 3-pack is where most of your starts from search actually come from.
Second, real location and treatment pages. One indexed page per location. One per service. Not a homepage trying to rank for everything in every city. Dr. Greg Efros came to us with 2 locations. He's opening his 7th. Part of that came from real local infrastructure in each market: every location got its own page and its own GBP setup.
Third, reviews. Volume and recency matter, and so does how the front desk responds when a review shows up. The local pack reads all of that as a ranking signal, not just social proof.
If your report keeps showing traffic growth and your TC isn't booking more consults, it's almost always one of those three.
