Everything we know about the man in yellow (Hastur?)
I’ve been trying to put together everything we actually know so far about the Man in Yellow. First of all: he is the voice Jim Matthews heard on the radio at the end of Season 1, after the whole tower experiment. Second: he also is the entity behind the voices Sarah was hearing.
What’s interesting is that the series seems to be distinguishing him from the other supernatural forces:
He’s clearly not the Music Box monster/entity. He is not the Kimono Woman. He also doesn’t seem to be one of the regular smiling creatures.
Now, the obvious question is whether he’s the being the creatures originally made the immortality pact with sacrificing their children in exchange for eternal life. The show hasn’t confirmed it yet, but honestly I’d be surprised if it turned out to be someone else entirely.
A lot of people have connected him to Hastur / The King in Yellow and Lovecraftian horror in general, and I definitely see why. But at the same time, I’m not convinced he’s literally a “god” in the cosmic horror sense.
There are a few things that make me hesitate:
He apparently feeds on human corpses, which makes him feel strangely biological.
When Julie encounters him during the time-travel/past sequence, he doesn’t immediately realize she’s there. If he were truly omniscient in the Lovecraftian god sense, that scene probably wouldn’t play out that way.
So my current theory is that he’s not a god exactly, but some kind of ancient prehuman entity/species with enormous psychic abilities powerful enough to be worshipped as a god, but still limited in certain ways.
Honestly, this season barely using the regular monsters at all feels intentional to me. It’s like the show is quietly telling us that the real conflict was never against the creatures themselves, but against whatever stands above them. And right now, the Man in Yellow seems like the clear final antagonist.
I really don’t think they’re going to introduce ANOTHER higher evil above him as “the real one.” It would feel redundant at this point.
Curious what everyone else thinks.
