Guy I’ve been dating suddenly gone silent

I need honest outside opinions because I genuinely can’t tell if I handled this situation maturely or if I overwhelmed this guy.
Ive been talking to a guy for a few months and gotten pretty emotionally attached. We’re not officially dating, but we talked consistently, and got along very well. I really liked him because he made me feel very comfortable and safe to fully be myself around him.
Over the last few weeks though, things started feeling different. It’s been a while since we’ve seen each other because of finals and other factors, and even when we make plans they often end up changing or not happening. He also became slower and more inconsistent with texting, which started making me anxious and confused about where I stood with him.
The complicating factor is that his grandpa passed away last week, and he told me he’s been struggling mentally and withdrawing from everyone lately. So I’ve been trying really hard to be understanding.
After weeks of not seeing each other, I finally told him that I really like him, but the inconsistency has been hard on me and that I need more consistency/reassurance if this is something we both want to continue.
He responded thoughtfully, apologized, said he really likes me too, explained that he’s been mentally struggling and not feeling like himself lately, and ended by saying “I will get back to myself, I just need a bit of time.”
I replied saying I wasn’t mad and I know it’s not intentional, but that if he doesn’t feel like he’s in the right headspace to continue things with me right now, I’d rather know that than keep feeling confused about where we stand.
Now he hasn’t replied since then, which is unusual for him because he usually texts back within a few hours, and I’m anxious and wondering if I pressured him too much or if his silence is basically him indirectly saying he can’t do this right now.
At the same time, this whole situation has made me incredibly anxious and I don’t know if I’m wrong for feeling like I deserve more consistency than this.
