[NY] Property Mgmt not extending ST rental
I rented this furnished apt last year for 2-3 months when I was in the process of buying a home. I backed out of buying the house and extended this lease until May 31. I've actually been enjoying the low stress experience of this option and figure I'll stay until something better pops up.
The leasing agent i originally signed with, called me weeks before my lease was up last time. Mid April , I hadn't heard from her , so I called her - she didn't handle this property any longer!
So come to find out, they leased this apt for July & Aug, to a couple that has leased it before in the summer. And therefore won't extend my lease.
I don't know if this property mgmt company is going thru something because nobody returns calls/texts/emails. It took me 4 comms to get the PM to say it's unavailable for extension.
It's really bad biz for them because they are losing thousands of dollars, by not extending to me - it's unlikely someone would rent this in the cold months, in a location not near big business. And it's a tad pricey for the demographics.
I've resigned myself to leaving and am looking at other options, and I have fam to stay with. But can they do this? I have an actual lease with the prop and it just says either party must give 30 day notice of nonrenewal. But who knows what really legal?
And just to add, I'm a no stress tenant and pay rent early.
