Workplace reasonable adjustments, what are your thoughts?
When it comes to asking for reasonable adjustments or explaining my autism to an employer, my parents have always told me to not tell them anything about my struggles with verbal communication as this is not a protected characteristic and can be used against you, which I can understand for certain jobs where verbal communication is vital.
However I am at this dilema where verbal communication seems to be one of the main elements of my disability, and even the most basic of jobs have a real, almost unnecessarily complicated interview process in place, they even ask for excellent communication skills, no matter how much preperation and verbal practice I do and I do a lot. at the interview it feels like we are rehersing for some kind of show, have to mask, perform, and communicate in a way that does not reflect me at all, It can feel so robotic and strict with the formality of it all, and usually being situated inside of a small confined office can also make things worse.
Actually knowing what reasonable adjustments you can actually ask for is another confusing aspect of it, is what I am asking for too much, like what is considered reasonable and unreasonable?
