Theory about Lumiere (full game spoilers)

I think that Painters were a known thing in Lumiere before the Fracture, and had similar (but weaker) abilities as Painters from outside the Canvas. Reasoning:

• Simon and Julie both use the term "Paintress" before Lumiere even knew about the significance of the number on the monolith - Simon calls Clea "that Paintress"
• It's played as a joke, but the painter in the prologue instantly finishing the painting of Sophie and Gustave suggests that he conjured it out of chroma, rather than brushstrokes
• Without Painters Aline would have to dramatically rewrite the history of her family for the Painted version of it
• Painted Renoir and Alicia have extremely powerful chroma manipulation, and given that Aline got trapped atop the monolith it seems likely they had those before the Fracture
