Flagstone floor interior

Looking for some advice. We live in an old style cottage and have flagstones on the floor of the living room and although they look nice it makes the room very dark and they are uneven so myself and the kids are forever hurting our feet . Is there any easy way to make them better without spending a small fortune? Thanks 😁
