Plumber (probably) broke electrical wire to garage, do we have any recourse?
In January we had a tree root grow into our kitchen drain pipe, which had to be rerouted to the sewer. The plumbers had to dig up the ground outside and lay pipe where there wasn't any before to bypass the broken pipe with huge root in it. At one point I heard them talking about romex and when I went out there I saw a cable just kind of there, in the ground. I don't know anything about plumbing or electrical stuff so when they responded that it was probably something old that was no longer in use I didn't question it, they are the professionals. Later on (days after they were finished with the pipe reroute) when I went to open the garage, it wouldn't open using the key pad so I called a garage door repair guy. He came out and said there was no power to the garage and advised that I call an electrician. This is a townhome with a detached garage that is used for storage and we could still get the door to open manually, so we didn't get around to dealing with it right away. Long story short (sorry, not that short) we had an electrician out yesterday and he confirmed that there is no power to the garage. When he mention the word romex, I remembered that that was the same word the plumbers used. I showed the electrician where the plumbers had to dig to reroute the pipe and he pointed out that there is a conduit box thing right near where I saw the cable the plumbers called romex and he is pretty sure (without proof) that they likely broke it when digging. The timeline fits, in hindsight we see how foolish it was to not deal with the garage door as soon as there was an issue but I NEVER would have put the pipe reroute together with the garage door not working as the cause. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.
