Parents should be legally responsible for their child's actions.
Weak responsibility assigned to minors for their actions leads to multiple bad outcomes which are real and visible:
-
While it is true that some notions of responsibility are developing in young age, it doesnt make children inherently less intelligent - and they are capable of recognizing that they are incentivized to act with less legal oversight (simply said, they can do bad things and not be responsible for those).
-
Criminal organizations recognize this responsibility/enforcement gap and exploit minors to commit crimes or shift the blame to minors.
-
The current legal standard incentivized 'irresponsible parenting' - parental responsibility, even if it exists on the state level, is capped to ridiculously low amounts - $1,000-$25,000. For some specific cases, there's 'family purpose doctrine' that applies, for example, to the damage caused by using a family car, for example (and here damage assessment can be high, in tens of thousands or even millions).
We need to flip the standard - the parents need to be assumed responsible for child's actions unless legal exceptions can be claimed/proven by the parents/guardians (estranged children, accident, etc.).
