Dependent vs independent status confuses most students

The FAFSA asks if you are a dependent or independent student. Most students answer this question wrong. Your tax status does not matter. Living on your own does not matter. Paying your own bills does not matter. Your parents not claiming you on their taxes does not matter. The FAFSA has its own rules.

You are independent only if you meet one of these specific criteria. You are 24 or older. You are married. You have children who get more than half their support from you. You are a veteran or on active duty in the military. You are a graduate student working toward a master's degree or PhD. You were in foster care at any point after age 13. You are an emancipated minor. You are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

If none of those apply, you are dependent. Even if your parents give you no money. Even if you have not spoken to them in years. Even if you file your own taxes.

There is a process called dependency override. It is rare. It is for students with extraordinary circumstances. Abuse. Abandonment. Incarceration of both parents. Human trafficking. If you are in one of those situations, contact your financial aid office. They will give you a form. You will need to write a statement. You will need letters from counselors or social workers who can verify your story. The process takes months. It is not guaranteed. But it exists. Answer honestly. 🏠
