Does anyone else have hens that hate their rooster?

Discussion

RooRoo is not aggressive towards his 7 ladies in terms of mating, but he has his favorites (the three creme legbar mixes, he's a creme legbar). The others he won't let eat until he's eaten. Instead of guarding while they eat, he's right in it. He'll peck some of the girls to drive them off so his special girl and the other two mixes eat first. He's watchful, and he's already tangled with a hawk, and he's good with people and has a relatively quiet crow, so we're keeping him. BUT.

I have seen him court a hen a handful of times and I think I saw him mate one a few years ago. The eggs hatch, he's getting his job done, but the bulk of the girls Do Not Like Him. Yesterday, Constellation got courted. He did the little chirps, the sideways approach, and she left. He followed her, all hopeful, danced a bit again, and she ran. He chased her a bit, but she ran straight to me and got picked up. Our brown hen, Penny, is the same way although she doesn't run to us.

Now, he'll pester them but back off when they don't crouch. The flock will hang out with him for protection. We don't have much if any squabbling over pecking order. He actually poofed and me and at my husband when we were picking up reluctant-to-be-held hens for one reason or another. We each got poofed at ONCE, turned to face him, and you could SEE the "Oh oh...oops....oh No...what the heck was I thinking?! AAAAAH!" look and the immediate deflation. So, overall, he's doing a good job but it's the first time I've seen almost an entire flock tell a roo to beat it when he courts. If they didn't have missing head feathers or ratty wing feathers on one hen, I wouldn't think he was mating at all...but the eggs I gave away DID hatch.

Anyone else just have a deeply unpopular roo that the girls tolerate but won't mate often, and who doesn't do much tidbitting and chases the girls off food? He and his girlfriend get along great, their two daughters (the other 3/4 creme legbar mixes) are also guarded and given food priority, but that's it. If you had one like that, were you able to do anything? I'm debating sending the dog out to keep him from guarding the food when I toss out treats, although frankly the drake backs him off so HIS girls can eat (and he's very popular with the ladies!).
