Is there a social issue where some Irish people (whether in Ireland or in England) distance themselves from being Irish and actually badmouth their own background in an attempt to socially integrate w/ Brits? I'm wondering if there is something similar going on like in the USA.

The similarity I'm wondering about is that in the USA every minority race has issues with "pick-mes". They badmouth their own race and distnace themselves from it, to fit in with the majority race. It is a broad issue in the social conversation.

Given some of the history between Ireland and England, I'm wondering if there is a similar social issue currently.
