How to prevent herbs and spices from clumping

My herbs keep clumping and I asked my mom why and how to avoid it. She says its inevitable with age. But I realized something, we tend to pour the herbs over boiling hot stuff like soups. Isn't the reason the herbs clump because the steam gets into the bottles? Or is it just inevitable herbs and spices will always clump in their boxes overtime
