How safe is walking around downtown SF alone late at night (until 2-3am)?

Hey everyone, visiting SF next week and trying to calibrate my expectations on safety.

Quick context so you understand where I'm coming from: I'm from Buenos Aires originally, now living in Montevideo. In these cities, when we talk about "safety" we really mean the probability of getting violently mugged on the street — someone pulling a knife or a gun on you.

Stuff like getting your wallet lifted because you kept it in your back pocket, or someone snatching your phone out of your hand and running — we don't really file that under "unsafe city," we file it under "I was being an idiot." So I already know not to flash my phone, not to walk staring at Google Maps, etc.

My actual plan: I'll be walking around downtown / the center mostly alone, including Saturday night until 2-3am.

Appreciate honest takes, not trying to fearmonger or downplay — just want a realistic read.
