Nimble Streamer adds Opus, FLAC, AC3, EAC3, VP8 and VP9 to RTMP via the Enhanced RTMP spec
Veovera's Enhanced RTMP spec has been around for a bit - it's what brought HEVC and AV1 into RTMP - and now Softvelum has implemented the latest additions to the spec in Nimble Streamer.
The newly supported codecs:
- Audio: Opus, FLAC, AC3 (Dolby Digital), EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus)
- Video: VP8, VP9
Crucially, this works across all four RTMP modes - receive, pull, republish, and playback - so you're not limited to just ingest. Full passthrough in all directions.
A few things this unlocks in practice:
**WebRTC → RTMP without transcoding.** VP8/VP9/Opus are native WebRTC codecs. Previously getting browser-captured content into an RTMP pipeline meant a forced transcode. No longer.
**Lossless audio ingest.** FLAC over RTMP means you can preserve source audio quality end-to-end before your final distribution encode.
**Broadcast surround passthrough.** AC3 and EAC3 are everywhere in broadcast/OTT. Being able to receive and republish these natively without unwrapping and re-encoding saves real resources.
