If a fanfic takes place before Gen VI how should one handle the type chart and existence of Fairy types?

I’m writing an AU that branches off towards the end of the Battle Frontier arc (specifically “Battling the Enemy Within” being the nexus point, with Ash and the evil King permently fusing). Given the types of Pokemon are gonna play a big factor in story I was wondering how to adress the fairy in the living room
