My daughter asked if we'd have to move if my marriage went wrong again
I'm 41, have two kids (8 and 12) from my first marriage and I'm getting married again next spring. My fiance and I have been together for three years and things have been really good, she's been great with my kids and they love her. A few nights ago my daughter asked me at bedtime if we'd have to leave our house if things went wrong with the wedding and something about the way she asked it cut right through me, it just opened a part up that I'd been quietly pushing aside.
My first marriage ended badly. We didn't have anything sorted out legally and the whole thing was a mess that my kids watched happen. I own the house we live in now, bought it after the divorce, built it up myself and my kids have grown up in it. I also have college savings set aside for both of them that I've been putting money into since they were small. My fiance knows the backstory but we've never really talked about what that means for how we handle things this time. She's mentioned wanting to combine everything after the wedding and I haven't said anything because I don't know how to bring up that I want to make sure certain things stay protected for my kids without it sounding like I'm already planning for things to go wrong.
I don't want to put a damper on things but after everything we went through I promised myself I'd never put my kids through that kind of uncertainty again and I just don't know how to be both the guy who protects his kids and the guy who makes his fiance feel fully trusted.
